How to Grow an Avocado Tree From a Pit: Step 3

Step three is a little more involved. Most of the guides that I have seen online say to take 3 toothpicks and stick them into the sides of the pit. I find that toothpicks are too fragile. Usually the pit is just too hard and they break really easy. I personally choose to use 2 long finishing nails that I found in the garage. The nice things about these is that they are reusable. When you pull them out later you can use them for another avocado pit or to hold 2 peices of 2×4s together. It is your choice.
Placement of these nails are somewhat important. They should be near the equator of the pit, but I would angle them up towards the point of the pit. This way when you submerge the pit in water, the water will cover more of the pit. You will see what I mean in the next step.
