The First Step to growing your own Avocado Tree from a pit is to find an Avocado. This is where the pit is going to come from. Without the Avocado there can be no pit. Without the pit, there can be no tree. See where I am going with this?

The Next Step is the most fun. You eat the Avocado. There are so many ways to eat an Avocado. My favorite is to add it to a ham sandwhich. I also enjoy a good guacamole.

Take a sharp knife and cut around the avocado pit. Twist the two sides of the avocado and pull the two sides apart exposing the pit. You can pop that pit out with a spoon. With the same spoon, scoop out the flesh of the avocado leaving the rind. Then use the meat of the avocado for your recipe.

Make sure you wash off the pit with water, getting off as much of the green off as possible.

Step Three is a little more involved. Most of the guides that I have seen online say to take 3 toothpicks and stick them into the sides of the pit. I find that toothpicks are too fragile.  Usually the pit is just too hard and they break really easy. I personally chose to use 3 long finishing nails that I found in the garage.  The nice thing about these is that they are reusable. When you pull them out, you can use them for another avocado pit or use them to hold 2 peices of wood together.  It is your choice.

Placement of these nails are somewhat important.  They should be near the equator of the pit, but I would angle them up towards the point of the pit. This way when you submerge the pit in water, the water will cover more of the pit. You will see what I mean in the next step.
