What is the Nutcracker Story All About and Where Do I Buy Tickets

“The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman is a classic story that has been told by many in the forms of theatre and ballet around Christmas every December for years. It is a strange tale about a young lady who dreams about a Nutcracker Prince and his war against the King of Mice.

The story begins with a Christmas Eve Party where a Toymaker shows off some of his newest creations. As the children begin to open their presents the young girl opens her gift, a Nutcracker. One of the other children becomes jealous because of the attention the Nutcracker is given. He breaks it, causing all kinds of commotion.

As it becomes late, the little girl begins to shrink to the size of the nutcracker. All the toys come to life and the room is overtaken by an army of mice. The Nutcracker faces off with the King of the Mice. They fight and fight. When it looks like the Nutcracker is going to loose, the little girl runs up and hits the King of mice on the head with her slipper. The King falls to the ground dead. The mice run away with their King.

The Nutcracker turns into a prince and takes the girl to the land of sweets. Together they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. They tell the fairy about their battle with the army of mice. The Fairy then rewards them with a series of dances.

The story concludes with a dance between the Prince and the girl, when she finally wakes up next to the Christmas tree with her Nutcracker in her arms.

Of course this is the ballet that I am describing. The written word has a lot more detail. You should read it if you can find it in English. If you are interested in seeing this beautiful story in dance this holiday season, make sure you buy your nutcracker tickets now. Most shows will start to sell out fast. If you want decent seats, you need to buy them early.
