I Knew it Wasn’t Going to be Long Before Someone (iPhoneSimFree & George Hotz) Hacked the iPhone
I read today in a New York Times article that there have been several people who have bipassed AT&T’s Locks on the iPhone so they can use it on a different wireless network. I think this is great. When the phone first came out I was extremely annoyed that AT&T for staking a monopoly on the iPhone. I wanted one, and there is no way I was going to buy one if they could only be used with AT&T. I don’t like AT&T. Their business history is built on holding a grip on their customers and forcing them to pay crazy prices for their services.
I think this little iPhone Crack falls in along the lines of altering your PS2 to play copied PS2 Games. It is also in line with the person who broke the DVD code a few years ago so people could copy DVDs whenever they wanted to. The only difference that I see is that altering your own iPhone (especially if you bought it out right from the apple store) to work with your own carrier should not be illegal. It’s your device and you should have the freedom to use any carrier you want.
George Hotz put one of the altered iPhones up on eBay. It aparently was bid up to several thousand dollars. Now it seems that there are many unlocked iPhones on ebay.
If you are interested in the two sources who actually have unlocked the iPhone, check out George Hotz’s Blog and iPhoneSimFree.com. I found the information intereting even though I have no interest in buying an iPhone at that price. I will wait ’til the technology comes down in price.
