Achieving Your Goals: Long Term Goals

Sometimes you need to have a dream. If you don’t have a dream, you won’t get very far in life, or at least you won’t feel like life is worth living. I believe that in most cases, people have more than one dream. Most people have several dreams. Usually people dream of a successful career and dream of finding that special someone and settling down and having a family. Some people have dreams about getting out of debt. Some have dreams to travel. Whatever the case may be, these dreams are (or should be) considered your Long Term Goals.

How Do You Set Your Long Term Goals?:

  1. Get a Pen and Paper
  2. WRITE THEM DOWN! Sit down and write down everything that you want to accomplish before you die. Don’t leave anything out. This could actually take a while and maybe several sheets of paper. As you think about them, keep adding to this list.
  3. Weed out the impossible ones. Cross through the ones like “Be the first person to set foot on Mars.” Unless you actually are an astronaut and NASA is really planning to send a man to Mars in our lifetime; that is pretty much an impossible feat. If you don’t want to cross them out, at least move them to a different list called something like “If the Chance Ever Shows Itself” Those crazy dreams should not be dismissed, but rather put on the back burner for dreams that you can actually do something about.
  4. Write a time period next to each of your long term goals. This time period should reflect when you hope to actually accomplish your goal.
  5. Start writing your Short Term Goals for each of the long term goals. We will discuss Short Term Goals in the Next Episode.

Dare to Dream. You only have one life, so don’t put those dreams on hold just because life gets in the way. We will find a way to make those dreams come true.
