Writing Tips: How Many Chapters Should My Novel Be
This is a really easy question to answer. You should have as many chapters as it takes to finish telling the story. It’s that simple. Like any story, you will have to write ‘till there is nothing left to write about.
I personally like to write one chapter per day. (In the case of NaNoWriMo, I shoot for 30 chapters.) It doesn’t happen very often, but if when I actually do it, I can finish the first draft of a novel within a couple of months. I have been known to have many of my chapters being about 500 words long. When I go back and edit those short chapters, a lot of times, they get consolidated with other chapters, making for fewer chapters but a better flow of events.
Other times I like to write a chapter per week. This gives me a little wiggle room on my daily word count while allowing the book to flow nicely with decent size chapters. When I plan out the chapters I shoot for about 50 hopefully finishing the novel in about a year (with a couple weeks vacation)
