Writing Tips: How Many Characters Should Be in My Novel

I am a strong believer that most stories have one main character. This character is the one the reader will follow around most of the story. All of the other characters are supporting characters. These other characters are sometimes a large part of the story, but are only there to drive the plot for the main character. This is true in the Harry Potter books as well as the JRR Tolkein’s “Lord of the Rings”. Without Harry or Froddo, there would be no story. The other characters would have nothing to do.

As for number of characters, I believe that you should treat them like the Chapters in Your Novel. You will need enough characters to adequately tell your story. There should be no more than that, and no less. I know. That’s no help at all. But it’s the truth.

When writing, make sure you get to know your characters. Sit down with them and ask them about themselves. You will be amazed at what you will learn about your novel when you start to pull out those character traits and begin to see the depth of who is in your novel.
