Writing Tips: How to Handle Too Many Ideas.

Every now and then, it seems that some writers get bombarded with story ideas. They are watching TV and the show that they are watching inspires a unique idea that they just have to write down. On their way to find a sheet of paper, three more ideas pop in his head that are off-shoots from the first idea.

These ideas tend to come in waves. Some writers get them when they are extremely run down, under the influence, in the middle of the night when he is awoken by a dream. I feel this happens when all the barriers the writer has up around their mind has crumbled and he is able to envision things that normally would not show themselves. Some writers call this the Beast… the creature that shows up at the most inopportune time and says, “You must write this!” It can be frustrating and exciting at the same time.

The only real advice that I can give to you (It works for me) is this:

Get one of those blank bound books (8.5×11 is my favorite) from your local super bookstore. Take it with you everywhere and write all your story ideas in it. Just start at page one and let loose on the pages. Don’t write a full story in this book, just the ideas. When you are finished with your current project, then you will be able to go back to the book and choose your next project. If you take full advantage of the notebook, you will never run out of ideas to write about.
