Writing Tips: Daily Word Count
As a writer, I believe you should have a goal to write a certain amount everyday, fiction or non-fiction. If you are writing, you are honing your skills as a writer.
How many words should you write everyday? Well… that depends on you. Every person is different. If you have a full time job and a family, you may only have an hour (or even less) to devote to writing.
Whatever you do, don’t set your daily word count too high. You will become discouraged if you don’t reach that goal. In some cases I have heard of writers actually quit writing totally because they could not stick to their daily word count.
On the other hand, if your word count goal is too low, you will never get anything completed.
During the month of November, try to write 1667 words per day. This will equal 50,000 words at the end of 30 days. That is a long novella.
I suggest that if you have a full time job, you should strive to write 300-500 words per day. A standard in print book page is usually about 250 words. If you can write 500 words per day, you will be able to have a 730 page book in one year. Wow!
If a daily word count seems a little daunting, try a weekly word count. This allows you to write less one day and more the next to catch up. I can’t do this. I would end up writing all the word on Saturday (or not and feel bad because I didn’t make my word count.
Whatever you do… Just keep writing.
