Maybe I am a little biased, but I think that everyone should want to write a novel, or a non fiction book before theiy die. OK… I understand that most people don’t have the best language skills and don’t have the attention span to actually sit down and write a novel, but I think that it is something that everyone in the world would benefit from, even if it never sees the outside of your own home.
Why do I think this is something that everyone should do. Here is a list for you to ponder:
A sense of accomplishment - There is nothing like completing a novel… at least that is what I am told. I am about half way through my first draft. I look forward to the day that I can finally say that it is finished.
Help you live forever - OK… I can see the skepticism on your face. Think about it though. Shakespere wrote his plays hundreds of years ago and he is still alive in the thousands of productions of his work all over the world, not to mention the movies that millions own that are based on his plays. If you can write something that will live on past your demise, you may just have a chance to live forever in the thoughts and stories of others.
Get out some of your feelings - There are times when your feelings are so strong that you want to do something about them, but logic says that you are probably wrong for feeling that way or it is best to just leave well enough alone. Writing can be an amazing outlet. Do to your characters what you want to do the the people who made you feel that way. It is a great release.
Do things that you would never be able to otherwise - Have you ever wanted to fly or travel to the moon, of be the opposite sex? Now you can. Live the life you want in the shoes of a character that your mind has created. It can be an amazing escape from your own reality.
Potential to earn a lot of money - I am not going to quote figures, but if you could get a few thousand people to buy your book where you make a few dollars profit on each book… well… that could add up fast. You should not really think about the money though. It is more important to write something for the sake of the story. If you write for money, your work will be missing its soul.
Meeting many other people - There are thousands of writers, maybe even millions of writers. You will benefit from talking with these people. Make friends with your fellow writers. Have writing sessions with these writers. They will only make you better.
Develop your focusing and consistancy skills - It is important to write everyday. If you can do this, you will slowly become an amazing writer. Take an hour every morning or in the evening before you go to bed to work on your novel. 500-1,000 words everyday can eventually turn into two or three novels every year.
