Day 032.2: Takedown

It wasn’t long before he was within inches of the beast. It was a large beast, a herbivore that resembled a cross between a deer and a bore. It didn’t have antlers. It had tusks. It stood tall but was very stocky with a thick Mohawk of fur down its back. It was a tough animal that spent a lot of time eating leaves off the thornberry tree. They never ate the thronberries (guess they couldn’t figure out how to get past that spiny shell). They were more interested in the leaves. These creatures are the reason that these trees were tall, with a bare trunk and a ball of leaves at the top where they couldn’t reach.

Athvor gave one last push with his wings. It was a small push since there was very little room for him to move between the trees, but it was just enough. His talons caught the hide of this animal and pulled it down to the ground, forcing it off balance. One down, he made quick work of its life. He placed a hind foot on the rump of the animal, crushing the bone beneath his weight. Then he took one large bite of its jugular when it raised its head to scream in pain.

Athvor hated causing pain for any creature. He made sure he ended the life as fast as possible. There was no need to cause this kind of suffering. If he could kill the creature without it even knowing, he would have. This kill was efficient. It didn’t have time to struggle, although Athvor felt a little guilty about making the last thoughts that ran through its mind ones of pain and fear. It couldn’t be helped though.
