How to go Viral: Create Something Fun

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

This is similar to several of the posts I have already written. I did a post on helping people. I did another on getting people excited. I have yet to talk about doing something fun. You want to make sure people are enjoying themselves on your website. If you think about it, it is kind of like your house. It is like you are having company over and you need to make sure there is plenty of food and lots of entertainment.

Of course people love FREE stuff. If you have FREE stuff, readers will continue to come back over and over again in hopes to win FREE stuff.

You can also make things fun by playing games. Come up with some sort of game that has to do with what you are talking about. Provide a prize for the winners. It can be as easy as a digital copy of the series of articles you have written on the subject they are playing the game for.

I have seen all kinds of Forum games. One of my favorites is the word association game. The forum thread starts off with a word that has to do with the website. The next entry will be someone naming a second word that pops into their head when they think of the first. I have seen this came go on for thousands of entries. Of course you have to have a busy forum for something like this to take place.

Start some kind of round robin. Start a story or a poem and allow your readers to continue that story or poem in the form of a blog comment.

I am sure there are multitudes of ways to entertain your visitors. Make sure they are happy, and they will stay a long time.

How To Go Viral: Help Others

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I have found that if you help others, others will help you. It’s a whole karma thing. What goes around comes around.

I had a small problem with mice in my garage. I took the time to look up humane ways to catch them. I figured if I was going to go through the hassle of catching these mice, I should probaboy share with the world how I did it.

Needless to say, I was able to catch three of them. Then I shared my triumph with the entire world. This page has been the most popular page on my site to this very day.

The reason people like it, is because it tells them how to do something very useful. They find my page because they, themselves, have a problem with mice. They search for humane mousetraps and they go through the short list of other sites that really don’t give them the information they are looking for, then they look to my site. If I am lucky, they see a link on that page that interests them, they click it and I make a little money.

I have tried to make a number of these pages. The serried of posts you are reading right now are meant to be helpful. I am hoping you will like what you see here. Maybe you will tell your friends and family and coworkers about this weblog and the interesting series of posts on how to make your website go viral. The more people you tell, the more traffic I receive. The more traffic I receive, the more possible it is for me to earn a bit of cash.

When you write a webpage that is suppose to help someone, make sure you are writing it to help other people and not writing it hoping to make money. If you write just hoping to make money, your writing will lack something. You will not go in-depth with your topic and most people will move on to a page that really will help them.

If you focus on the topic and write from your heart, traffic will follow naturally. You will want to be as honest and up front with your readers as possible. They are the most important part of your website. If you are not up front with them, they will disappear.

How To Go Viral: Record a Video Promo

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Just like recording an audio promo, you will want to record a video promo. More people watch TV than listen to the radio in the same way, more people will watch a video than listen to your audio.

Recording and editing a video promo is a good bit more difficult than an audio recording. If you want it to be professional looking, you may want to hire someone to make it for you. There are some ways you can use video to help you advertise your website.

Things to remember when making your promo:

  1. Keep it short. TV commercials are usually 30 seconds long. Your shouldn’t be longer than that.
  2. State your Freebie. If you have something you are giving away, make sure you tell the viewers that your giving it away for FREE.
  3. Don’t forget your web address. So many people get so involved with what their site offers, they forget to mention the URL.
  4. Check your lighting. Make sure there is plenty of light. If you do it, shoot your video outside about an hour before sunset. This lighting is almost always the best.
  5. Speak clearly. You may speak to fast. Watch your video right away. If you hear words slurring together, then you should probably rerecord. This time slow down and speak loudly.

You can record it in several different ways as well:

  1. The walk and record. There are a number of shaky videos where the person is walking down the street talking into the handheld camera. This can work if you get a little practice and speak clearly. Some people find it hard to walk and speak into a camera at the same time.
  2. Sit at the computer and record your video from the webcam. You will have to use your personality to make this one work.
  3. Have your friends record the video for you.
