Your Word Prompt is: Brain Surgeon

******Fiction Written by Robert T Gasperson © 7/06/2007******

The nurse wiped the sweat from his brow. Everyone was on edge. Dr. Nobelton had never attempted anything like this before. This man had a huge copper pipe rammed into is mouth and up through part of his brain and out of the skull. There should be no way that this man could still be alive, but yet, there he was, laying on the gurney on front of him.

Dr. Nobelton began to cut around the tissue at the top of this man’s head. There was not a whole lot he could do to save the gray matter that was pulverized by the pipe on its way through the skull. “Does anyone know what happened to this man? How did he acquire such a gruesome wound?” said the doc through his facemask as he continued to work on the patient.

“His friend is in the waiting room. He says that this Dorian was taken down by an alien federation wrestler.” The nurse handed the next tool to the doctor.

“Get him scrubbed in,” said the doc, “I want him in here. I need to know what happened if I am going to save this man’s life.”

“Yes sir.” The nurse hurried out of the operating room soon to be replaced officially by another one to help assisting the doc.

Dr. Nobelton rooted around the pipe, irrigating it with water. This was definitely going to be tricky. This kind of damage would have to lead to an unhealthy life. Even if he was able to get the pipe out, there would be very little he could do about the damage to the brain. Not only that, the part of the brain that was damaged controlled his motor function and part of his long term memory. There is no question that he would have some kind of limitations.

The nurse came rushing back in with the young man who brought this catastrophe into the ER. “You this man’s Friend?” said the doc. The man nodded. “Quickly, tell me what happened.”

“Uh, well….” The man nervously fidgeted, rubbing the soft flesh between his thumb and first finger.

“Come on man! Time is running out. I need to know if there is something on this pipe inside his head. I don’t want to do more damage pulling this thing out than it did going in.”

“We were chasing this kid down the street.” The man looked down at the floor in shame, “It was something that we did on a regular basis. We didn’t really mean to hurt the poor kid, we just got a rush out of picking on him.”

“The point man, Get to the point.”

“Well as we ran, the boy suddenly turned and stuck his tongue at us. Then a small green man with antennae jumped out from behind a tree and growled. Of course we stopped dead in our tracks. We had never seen anything like this before.” The man paused a moment. “We didn’t have time to turn and run. The little green guy pulled out a metal pipe and jumped. It was like seeing Yoda in episode two. Dorian started to turn, but the pipe was thrust into his head. Blood went everywhere. He just collapsed. He didn’t say a word, just laid there with his eyes open.”

“How come you didn’t get hurt?” The doc started to slide the pipe gently up and out of Dorian’s Skull.

“I don’t know. He just looked at me, laughed, then ran away. It was like he taught the lesson that he was there to teach, then went on his merry way.” There was a brief pause as he watched the Doc pull the pipe completely out of hid friend’s head. There was no blood. It was as if the pipe had cauterized the wound as it went in. “Is he going to be OK?

“To be honest?” The Doc looked the man strait in the eyes, “I seriously doubt it.”

Your Word Prompt is: Discover

******Fiction Written by Robert T Gasperson © 7/04/2007******

The noise was unmistakable. There was definitely something in there. Jordan just didn’t know what it was. She had never heard anything like it before. The sound was high pitched and sent chills down her back like fingernails scratching a blackboard.

It had to be some kind of animal. Something large with a huge set of lungs. Pictures of what the beast making this sound could look like flashed in her mind. She imagined a pterodactyl, with a short beak and long fangs. Something that could shread her tender flesh to ribbons.

She knew that she could run. She could go tell someone. Someone who might actually be able to verify that noise. Someone who would go in there instead of her. Then again, if she got someone else to go in there, they would be able to claim any discovery that might be made. Instead of Jordan Nichols getting the Nobel Peace Prize, whoever she brought down here might receive it, or worse yet, they might destroy it losing all scientific gains.

She wasn’t going to leave. There was no way that she was going to let someone else steal her thunder. This was her find. Sure she was scared. Who wouldn’t be. She would just have to be careful. She would have to make sure whatever is in that room did not know that she was there. She would have to be very sneaky.

Jordan pushed herself up and stood up next to the wall. She peeked around the corner and saw nothing but blackness. Another high pitched screech bellowed from the dark. She pulled back and took a deep breath. She closed her eyes for a moment and said a short prayer. Then opened her eyes and ran for the darkness.

There were no more screeches as she ran into the room. She turned to the right and groped the wall looking for a light switch. She knew where it was. All these labs were the same. She had been in them a million times. Soon as she found it, she flipped it up. The room engulfed with light.

She squinted her eyes. It took a few seconds for them to adjust to the bright halogen lightbulbs. She strained as she looked around the room. There was nothing in there. The room was completely empty. There were four white walls and the doorway that she had just come through, nothing else.

After a moment of looking around, her eyes began to adjust to her white surroundings. That is when she noticed that the wall was moving. It was a strange movement. This wall was supposed to be concrete and mortar, built a mile under the ground. It was not supposed to move. Then the wall turned its head towards her. It was diamond shaped with the edges blending almost perfectly into the white of the wall behind it. There was no wonder why she didn’t see anything when she first arrived. The chemoflauge was perfect.

That was the last thought Jordan had before the white wall creature learched forward, opened its mouth wide and chomped down swiftly, severing her head from her body. It didn’t bother to chew. It just swallowed her head whole. Then it bellowed another high pitched squeal.
